Mother Theresa's of Bonda hills
Bonda hills is the residence of Bonda people in Khairput block of Malkangiri district in Odisha. There are 32 villages of 2 panchayats in the Bonda hills. Even after 70 yrs of independence it is sad to see that this tribe is neglected. Everything is a challenge here …… communication, health, education, drinking water….. It is in this dismal scenario some Bonda girls draws attention by their service to their own people. They have set a milestone by providing health services though they themselves are not literate.
It is true that there is a Government run medical dispensary in the Bonda hills. But no one knows when this dispensary opens and closes … Because of the terrible road the Bonda people can’t reach to the near by Community Health Centre in the Block headquarters, Khairput 20 kms away..The people are dependent on witchcraft and traditional medicines for their healing. In this scenario Asha Kiran Society reached out to this people. They started to give health service to the Bonda people by training the Bondas themselves. They trained up illiterate local girls in primary health care and appointed them to provide primary health care in different villages in the Bonda Hills. After their training these girls are able to provide services like administering injection, providing antenatal care to pregnant women and other primary health care to the people. There are few instances where people were saved from the point of death in last five years. It is astonishing to see that these girls are able to administer medicines although they are illiterate. They have set an example by giving these services without any charges.
