Asha Kiran Hospital Expansion • Lamtaput, Odisha

Fund a Brick.

The hospital where no one is turned away for lack of money.
Since 1992, Asha Kiran Hospital has been a 'pro-poor' hospital where no one is turned away for lack of money. Located in the remote tribal region of Lamtaput, Odisha, it serves over 40,000 patients every year. The hospital, a central part of the local community, is operating beyond capacity and urgently needs expansion.

For many here, the hospital is the last option — not the first.

In Lamtaput’s tribal communities, access to healthcare is shaped by distance, cost, and difficult terrain. A hospital visit can mean hours of travel, lost wages, or borrowed money.

  • People often delay treatment until the condition becomes critical.

  • Families face difficult choices between health, income, and survival.

  • The hospital becomes the final lifeline when local options are absent.

The hospital has outgrown itself.

The hospital is already operating at full capacity. Without expansion the access to care is at risk.

  • 92% bed occupancy indicates sustained pressure on capacity.

  • Infrastructure now requires upgrades to meet current regulatory standards.

  • With the license renewal nearing, these changes are essential to sustain the hospital's 30 years of service to the community.

Why now matters

With the license renewal nearing, these changes are essential to sustain the hospital's 30 years of service to the community.

Two Lives, One Journey
Gauri (name changed), a young woman from a remote tribal village went into labour with twins on 31 December. With no transport available, her family began carrying her on a makeshift cloth stretcher, walking for kilometres through difficult terrain. By the time they reached a point where help could be arranged, she had already delivered the first baby. When the Asha Kiran team reached her, they quickly brought her to the hospital. She was immediately taken to the labour room, where the second twin was safely delivered on 1st January. Today, both children are alive, born in two different years and in two different districts of Odisha — a rare and beautiful example in a place where access to timely maternal care is often the difference between life and death. Stories like this remind us why our work matters. In many of the communities we serve, reaching a hospital itself is a major challenge. Women in labour often travel long distances on foot or are carried by family members, with no guarantee of timely medical support. Delays like these can lead to complications that are preventable with proper care. At Asha Kiran Hospital, we continue to do everything we can to ensure that mothers receive safe and dignified care. From emergency transport support to skilled delivery services, our goal is to stand with families in their most critical moments. Because sometimes, saving a life begins simply with reaching in time.
